NEW URBANISM

Crawford, Bunte, Brammeier (CBB) has prepared numerous preliminary assessments of traffic conditions for redevelopment areas. CBB takes into account planning movements such as new urbanism to improve the quality of life and reduce environmental pollutants. New urbanism is about creating a better future for us all and raising the quality of life and standard of living by creating better places to live. New urbanism involves fixing and infilling cities, as well as the creation of compact new towns and villages. This type of development routinely results in attractive communities that contain distinctive neighborhoods, places of interest, and human-scale development. These communities also place less emphasis on the automobile while promoting the convenience of mixed uses, proximate services and “walkable” environments.
Some of the characteristics of new urbanism development are walkability, connectivity, a diverse mix of uses, increased density and, ideally, an improved quality of life. When each of these principles is successfully accomplished, the new urbanism characteristics can result in less vehicular traffic than might be expected despite an increase in density.
