1. Travel – Leave Early: Whether you are driving or flying, leaving early is a must. For those road trips it can be very beneficial to get on the road before most travelers. Try to make an effort to hit the road before it gets too crowded. If you’re flying, be sure to get to the airport around 2 hours early during this highly traveled season. Real Simple offers tips for holiday travelers, both driving and flying here.
2. General – Patience is a Virtue: The holidays are a stressful time for most people and it is important to not only understand this, but also to remember this. Taking out frustrations on fellow travelers will increase that stress and could create a negative atmosphere. Try long breathes and pausing for a moment if you experience stress. Read more about how deep breathing is a natural built in stress reliever for the body here.
3. Mealtime: The best way to be prepared for your Thanksgiving Day meal is to plan ahead. Last minute prep can cause stress and make it difficult to get everything done in time. Think about what you need to do this Thursday and do in advance what you can. This will help your Thanksgiving Day go off without a hitch. We recommend checking Alton Brown’s out this meal prep list here.
Erika Fuesting, Project Manager – Signals and Lighting: “A few years ago a friend gave me a recipe for pumpkin cheesecake with chocolate swirl. Now I make it every year and it is fantastic!”
Jacque Lumsden, Marketing Coordinator/Transportation Planner: “One of my all-time favorite lunch options is a turkey sandwich, so my absolute favorite thing about Thanksgiving is the leftovers! My favorite way to spend Black Friday is a lunch complete with a good turkey sandwich with a stuffing/potato pancake!”
Jim Kane, Transportation Studies Specialist: “Thanksgiving at my parents’ house involves cramming all 50+ members of the extended family into the front room and dining room of their Chicago bungalow for dinner. It’s (literally) about as close as family can get!”
