You may notice more foot traffic tomorrow, October 8, 2014, as parents and children alike participate in International Walk to School Day. This day encourages communities, parents, and children to establish ongoing walking and cycling programs.
While there are many benefits of an active commute to school, the element of fun for you and your family seems to stand out at the top! The adventure to and from school can be a bonding time as you can enjoy one another’s company while experiencing the sounds and sights of the neighborhood. Not only is walking fun, but it promotes a healthier lifestyle, cleaner air, and community engagement.
By walking or biking to school, you can help children incorporate the daily recommended physical activity into their routine. This encourages a healthy lifestyle including a decreased risk of obesity, and can have life-long lasting impacts. A well connected transportation system promotes all modes of transportation, and participation in this activity works to raise that awareness.
A community that promotes walking or biking creates a stronger sense of community, safer streets, improved accessibility, and a range of benefits to all. It starts with one day, but can transform into a lifestyle change.
Here is a resource kit for more information on how you can be an advocate in your community. Finally, be sure to brag about how FUN your commute was! Share your photos or stories on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram at #WalktoSchoolDay and be sure to tag CBB so we can enjoy! Be sure to have a safe and fun National Walk to School day this year
